Charlie wrote lyrics and demo'd them. Debs sung to the demo, dressed in-character, and added harmonies. Charlie demo'd group shoutage, and Plat + Tawny (Platwife) added more shoutage. Plat mixed and glitched to his heart's content. A song was born! From Charlie: I think it would be cool to post several of the demos to show the process. 1) Plat sent me the instrumental which I listened to for at least a week before the "Jump! Jump on the bed!" hook came to me. 2) After I fleshed out the lyrics I sent a demo back, but I left out the crowd vocals (which were actually the 1st thing I heard in my head, and inspired the rest of the lyric). 3) We recruited Debs to sing but she was moving, so several weeks went by before she could send Plat some tracks, then Plat mixed several demos from Deb's tracks. 4) I heard an early one of these demos and was reminded that I wanted the crowd vocals to go in so I sent Plat a new rough demo with the crowd vocals dubbed over the top of Deb's early track. 5) Plat liked the crowd vocal idea so I re-tracked 4 vocals and sent them as 4 individual WAV files. Plat then added additional tracks on top of those 4 to fill out the crowd sound... and 6) Plat remixed the whole thing to the sugary sweet pop-tart concoction of yumminess we have here. I think that might be a cool "how-we-did-it" exposé of some sort, wouldn't it? At least 6 demos were made for this... and I bet Plat made 10 more that only he heard. So cool. Now of course, I think we need a video. :-) From Debs: I totally agree with Charlie here, and of course the first demo should be the one I was working off of, with Charlie singing. From Plat: When I heard Barbara's songskirmish recording for "Signalling to Mars" (see http://fiftyninety.fawmers.org/songs/4915), I really liked it, but I wanted to hear spacey stuff in the background. The melody stuck with me, and I was compelled to try arranging some parts around it. I failed a few times: I tried arranging to the original free-flowing demo but I'm largely bound to a click; I tried covering it outright, but my voice didn't match the mood. I thought I was stuck with an instrumental, but Barbara re-recorded vocals with her awesome Carpenters-like voice, and pieces began to fit together. From Barbara: Pinch me already! This opportunity has been so much fun and such an incredible surprise; it took me a minute to realize that Plat actually wanted to play with my original track to start with. So, I said he should collab with me. The following days were spent figuring out some ideas, eventually I mentioned I wanted to do a sort of parappa the rapper or sesame-street type song about hygiene. This was the one that perked Plat's attention. I then wrote up some lyrics, with absolutely no idea for a melody or anything in mind, just a simple rhyme scheme, and attempts at similar length syllabled lines... then Plat turned it into what you hear... I'm thoroughly convinced that he's a wizard, or an alien or something, because I have no idea how he got this out of those lyrics. Plat did the majority of the vocals, but both he and I wanted to try to have my vocals in there too for something. So, I spent some time doing different characters for vocals number 2. After a few attempts, and some equipment tweaking, I put on my best Cookie Monster impression and rolled with that. Thus, Heromonster was born. Then, Plat worked some magic again, and SHAZAM, here you have this. I'm wordy! Plat/Cow Exchange: Me like songs me don't need lyric-write. Guitar play with barred chords and singing Hero words! Phil: My "catchy demo" was me with a bad beat and delayed guitar. I told Plat I didn't think any guitar was necessary in the final mix, and he eventually came around.
